Professor Frédéric Leblond will be a guest speaker at Journée Phare 2018!

The Journée Phare 2018 organizing committee is very pleased to announce that we will be welcoming Professor Frédéric Leblond at the 10th edition of the Journée Phare!
Frédéric Leblond is a professor in the Department of Engineering Physics at Polytechnique de Montréal and Director of the Optical Radiology Laboratory. His research interests are to develop new medical instruments using different types of light to characterize tissues in a less invasive way and improve diagnostics during surgical procedures. In 2017, Québec Science magazine identifies its anti-cancer probe project as one of Québec’s 10 scientific discoveries of the year! This pencil-sized probe allows surgeons to determine in real time whether a tissue is cancerous or healthy by virtue of its specific signature in response to different light stimuli, allowing for better identification of the margins of the cancerous tissue. He subsequently won the Quebec Science 2017 Public Prize, reflecting the importance of this project for the population. Revolutionary technology, the probe could be marketed in the coming years as its efficiency is impressive.

M Francis Ouelette will be giving a talk during our Thursday dinner conference!

We are very pleased to announce that B.F. Francis Ouellette has accepted to present his research during the Thursday dinner conference!

BF Francis Ouellette
Consultant in bioinformatics

Francis Ouellette has accumulated management positions in the field of bioinformatics. After graduation (McGill University, University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University), he became coordinator of NCBI’s GenBank database (1993-1998). He was Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Bioinformatics at the University of British Columbia (UBiC) from 2004 to 2007, before transferring to the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research Computing and Bioinformatics Platform. (OICR), in Toronto, where he stayed for 10 years. During this time, he also became an associate professor at the University of Toronto in the study of systems biology to better understand cancer. Mr. Ouellette also sits on the boards of the “Saccharomyces Genome Database” and “ELIXIR”, and is involved in the publishing of the PLOS Computational Biology and DATABASE journals.

Now as a consultant in bioinformatics, Francis Ouellette’s expertise in the management of big data will enable him to advise several teams in the development of his scientific strategy and in the definition of his vision.

The 11th edition of the Journée Phare

The Abstract Booklet and Official Program are Available!

We invite all participants of the 9th edition of Journée Phare to take a look at our official program and abstract booklet, here below. There, you will find a detailed schedule of the conference, brief biographies of our guest speakers, and the abstracts from all our student presenters. This year, the students will share their research with us via student talks, short “blitz” and poster presentations!

To all poster presenters, please note that the number of your abstract in this booklet corresponds to your poster number, and this indicates which session you will be presenting in, and will be evaluated in. If we have assigned you an even-numbered poster presentation, you will present during the first session, from 10:55 AM to 12:00 PM. If we have assigned you an odd-numbered poster presentation, you will present during the second session, beginning at 1:00 PM. You may set up your posters as soon as you arrive on Friday, November 3rd, starting at 7:45 AM.

Please note that the Abstract Booklet is only available in French, but that you may find an English version of the schedule on our website.

Congratulations to the winner of a free room at the Château-Bromont Hotel!

We are pleased to congratulate Ms. Yong-Xin Chen, an undergraduate student at the Université de Sherbrooke and the winner of a free room at the Château-Bromont Hotel for the night of Thursday, November 2nd.

Ms. Chen won this prize as part of a draw we conducted among our participants who registered to Journée Phare before September 1st.

Congratulations, we are looking forward to seeing you soon at Journée Phare!

We are issuing a challenge to our presenters!

A shout-out to all presenters at the 2017 edition of Journée Phare!

We are issuing a challenge: are you able to summarize your research in a single sentence,   “lol my thesis“-style? Watch out, we don’t mean simply writing a title for your research, in scientific jargon. The goal is to be catchy, so as to hook people into attending your presentation. Be creative! Extra points if you are able to make it funny!

If you accept the challenge, please send us your submission at

Are you game?

Marianne Desautels-Marissal will host a workshop on scientific popularization!

We are very pleased to announce that a workshop on scientific popularization is planned for the afternoon of Thursday, November 2nd, and that it will be hosted by the scientific journalist Marianne Desautels-Marissal!

Marianne Desautels-Marissal is a Biochemistry graduate from UQAM who became interested in scientific journalism during her undergrad, when she worked as a group leader at Débrouillards day camps. In 2014, she received one of the most prestigious Canadian scholarships in scientific journalism, the Fernand-Séguin scholarship. This affords the unique opportunity for young, promising journalists to learn their craft by working directly with professionals from major media outlets. This enabled Ms. Desautels-Marissal to work in journalism as a website editor for Radio-Canada (CBC). Now, she is a reporter for both the CBC radio broadcast Les Éclaireurs and the new TV broadcast Électrons libres from Télé-Québec, where she works alongside Pierre Chastenay and Rabii Rammal, with an aim towards scientific popularization. Marianne Desautels-Marissal is also a first-time author of a popular science work on microbiota, known as “Mille milliards d’amies: Comprendre et nourrir son microbiome” (roughly translated as “Thousands of Billions of Friends: How to Understand and Feed Your Microbiota”).

This workshop will include a section during which Ms. Desautels-Marissal will describe her experience as a scientific journalist and her “popularization tips”, as well as a Q&A session.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming Marianne Desautels-Marissal this fall at Journée Phare!

Professor Sylvain Martel will be giving a talk during our Thursday dinner conference!

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Sylvain Martel has accepted to present his research during the Thursday dinner conference, and to share with us his somewhat unusual background as an engineer working in biomedical research!

Sylvain Martel is a research professor at Polytechnique Montréal with a background in engineering, and the head of the NanoRobotics Laboratory. He recently collaborated with researchers from Université de Montréal and McGill University in order to develop a new, more effective approach to deliver chemotherapy medication. This approach relies on the use of nanorobotic agents (specifically, magnetotactic bacteria) to guide and efficiently deliver chemotherapeutic drugs to the hypoxic zone of tumours. Professor Martel’s team consequently received the People’s Choice Award as part of the 2016 edition of the Québec Science magazine’s “Discovery of the Year” contest. Professor Sylvain Martel also holds a Canada Research Chair in Medical Nanorobotics.
