Professor Guillaume lettre will be a guest speaker at Journée Phare 2017!

The Journée Phare 2017 organizing committee is very pleased to announce that we will be welcoming Professor Guillaume Lettre as a guest speaker this fall, at the 9th edition of Journée Phare!

Guillaume Lettre is a professor at the Université de Montréal and a member of the Montreal Cardiology Institute, where he investigates the genetics of complex traits and pathologies, with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases. His team uses sophisticated genotyping and DNA sequencing tools, as well as statistics and bioinformatics, in order to identify genetic polymorphisms that influence the risk of cardiovascular and hematology disorders. Armed with an expertise in complex trait genetics, gained during a postdoctoral fellowship at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and at the Boston Children’s Hospital, Professor Lettre rallied over 300 researchers during a three-year period to contribute to a study recently published in Nature investigating the genetic bases of human height. Professor Lettre also holds a Canada Research Chair in Complex Trait Genetics.

Professor Gary Kobinger will be giving a plenary talk at Journée Phare 2017!

The Journée Phare 2017 organizing committee is pleased to announce that Professor Gary Kobinger from Université Laval in Quebec city has accepted to be one of our guest speakers this fall at the 9th edition of Journée Phare!

Gary Kobinger is professor in the Microbiology-Infectiology and Immunology department at Université Laval (Québec, QC) and director of the Infectiology Research Center since July 2016. Professor Kobinger also previously held the position of Chief of Special Pathogens at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg. A microbiologist by training, Professor Kobinger is known for his work on the prevention of viral hemorrhagic fevers. Most notably, he led the team responsible for developing the ZMapp, an innovative drug made of three monoclonal antibodies which targets the Ebola virus. He also participated in the making of a vaccine effective against this same virus (VSV-ZEBOV). His work on Ebola earned him the CBC Scientist of the Year award for 2015. Kobinger’s team still seeks to prevent the spread of similar diseases, and is now working on a vaccine for the Zika virus. The Zika virus is notably responsible for over 2500 cases of microcephaly in newborns in Brezil. Professor Kobinger also holds the Canada Research Chair in Novel Vaccines and Immunotherapies, and has authored over a hundred scientific articles published by highly respected journals.

The winner of two free tickets to Amerispa’s nordic baths is …

In keeping with what was previously announced, the Journée Phare 2016 Organizing Committee recently had a draw for two tickets giving free access to the Amerispa nordic baths at the Château-Bromont Hotel among our participants who registered and submitted an abstract before September 15th. We would like to congratulate our lucky winner, Ms. Weronika Jakubowska from Université Laval. Ms. Jakubowska is an MSc student and submitted the abstract « Endothélialisation d’un modèle reconstruit 3D de muqueuses vaginale humaine par la méthode d’auto-assemblage à des fins d’implantation », or ”Endothelialization of a reconstructed 3D model of human vaginal mucosa by method of self-assembly for implantation”.

We also wish to remind you that all of our participants will benefit from a 15 % promotional rate for Amerispa on Thursday, December 1st (9 AM-2 PM). The Amerispa nordic baths include a eucalyptus-scented steam bath, a Finnish sauna, whirlpool baths, a temperate pool, a Nordic waterfall and multiple relaxation areas!

Get to know the speakers for our workshop on how to write scientific articles!

We are very pleased to be able to offer a new item on our program this year: the workshop on how to write good scientific articles (be quick about signing up for the event, places are limited!). Here is some more information on the two associate editors who have agreed to host the workshop, Professor Jean-François Cloutier and Professor Louis Gendron.

Jean-François Cloutier is an associate professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal, QC, and holds the Canada Research Chair in Developmental Neurobiology. Appropriately, his research seeks to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying axonal guidance, a critical process during central nervous system development. Specifically, Dr. Cloutier and his team use an array of molecular approaches and mouse genetic models in order to identify molecular cues that guide early neuronal development, reasoning that a better understanding of these basic mechanisms may improve the treatment of neurological disorders and injuries requiring axonal regeneration. Additionally, Dr. Cloutier works as an associate editor for the Journal of Neuroscience, the official scientific journal of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) with an impact factor of 6.344.

Louis Gendron is full professor in the Pharmacology-Physiology Department of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke.  He is also Director of the Pain and Inflammation Research Axis at the CHUS Research Center, and an active member of Quebec Pain Research Network (QPRN) and the Sherbrooke Institute of Pharmacology (IPS). Dr. Gendron’s research focus is primarily on the delta opioid receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) of great interest to the treatment of chronic pain. Using both cellular and animal-based techniques, his team investigates the mechanism of action, regulation and trafficking of the delta opioid receptor, as well as its role in the treatment of chronic pain, depression and anxiety. Pr Gendron is furthermore the associate editor for the scientific journal Progress in Neuro-psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry, an international scientific journal with a 4.361 impact factor which publishes authoritative research articles and reviews in both experimental and clinical research.
